Early on in my writing I was looking to make an opening statement, to set the tone for the rest of the album. With this tune I defaulted to one of my great bugbears - the humourless, colourless, mean-spirited corporate world. I brought together programmed sequencers, pads, melodies and short anthems with deliberately disparate vocals. What was a lot of fun was playing the Roland Juno synth layers at the beginning. I needed an extra pair of hands in order to do it, so Elly stepped in and did a great job. It’s grown to become a nine and a half minute ‘mini operetta’ that introduces a number of the vocalists who appear later. Laurence’s electric guitar really is the cream on top. An unapologetic opening hurrah!
